Kanorado
The City of Kanorado is the last city you see as you are leaving Kansas and the first city you see as you are leaving Colorado, hence the name “Kan-orado.” The second largest city in Sherman County, Kanorado is a place replete with history. The land for Kanorado was deeded on July 5, 1888, as the railroad came through the area. Though the town was originally called “Lamborn,” its name was changed by the Post Office to “Kanorado” on September 9, 1903. The first grain elevator in town was operated by Charlie Rule and ran with a treadmill and horses, and the first car in Kanorado was a High Wheeler owned by Mr. and Mrs. Detwiler. With new cars coming to Kanorado, an oil station was opened by the White Eagle Company in 1913. Kanorado kept growing until its population reached a peak of over 500 residents between 1918-1926. During this time there were two hotels, three grocery, and dry goods stores, five oil companies, two hardware stores, two barber shops, several cafes, one bank, two pool halls, two blacksmith shops, two lumber yards, a telephone exchange, three garages, a campground with cottages, several cream stations, a drug store and doctor, a beauty shop and a dance hall.
Edson
Edson was the last town to have been started in Sherman County, located just 8 miles east of Goodland. Some of the first settlers of the community were Mary Brown, John Austin, John Atkinson, Mr. Holbrook, Casper Kipps, and Joe McKinney. It was originally a rail town and operated on the main line of the Chicago, Kansas, and Nebraska Railway. Today Edson is served by the Kyle Railroad. The plot for the town of Edson was filed in Sherman County on August 10, 1888, by Albert and Laura Harris. The first structure in Edson was the two-story depot, which served as a depot on the first floor and a home to the station agent on the second story. The first grocery store was brought to the area by Steele Yockey and the Post Office was established on September 12th, 1888. The first elevator in town was built in 1915 by John Horney. Edson’s first school, School District 71, was erected in 1886 and was made of sod. After a few years, a new schoolhouse was built in 1923 and several school districts were consolidated. In 1930, a brick building was built and in 1963 a gymnasium was added to the structure.
